Easter Week 2
Henry Purcell (1659-1695) wrote his 1689 opera “Dido and Aeneas” in a prologue and three acts to a libretto by Nahum Tate, after Virgil. Purcell was living in London at the time, and wrote the opera for a girls’ school in Chelsea. It is his only true opera (i.e. with music throughout) and is among the finest examples of 17th century opera.
