1930s Paris. Jean Cocteau's masterwork, translated by Jeremy Sams, revolves around love, sex and hate in a fabulously decrepit bourgeois family in their deliciously dusty apartment. Five characters, each trying and failing to reconcile their desires with persuasion and deceit. With its rambling wit and wavering melodrama, you'll find yourself laughing even when the characters are at their most blissfully tragic.
