Michaelmas Week 6
N.B. this show has been cancelled
"I am a Jew. Hath not a Jew eyes? Hath not a Jew hands, organs, dimensions, senses,
affections, passions… If you prick us do we not bleed? If you tickle us do we not laugh? If you poison us do we not die? And if you wrong us shall we not revenge?”
Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice depicts the consequences of hatred, prejudice and segregated society; a cocktail unfortunately as relevant today as ever before. This legalistic tragi-comedy is being brought to life at the Cambridge Union, an ideal location for this collision of history, rhetoric and contemporary discourse.
The show will be Easter Week 7 in the CU chambers. This is an incredible opportunity to work with the oldest student debating union in the world to explore issues of antisemitism which are, unfortunately, just as relevant today as they were in Shakespeare’s day. Plus we get to use the actual chambers as a stage!! How exciting!! It will also be a freshers heavy show so an incredible opportunity for freshers to get stuck in!
We know next term will be stressful what with exams but we’ll have a nice big team to support you and keep stress to a minimum!
