Easter Week 6
Xerxes falls in love with Romilda after hearing her beautiful singing, not knowing that she is in love with his brother Arsamene. Upon discovering their affair, Xerxes banishes Arsamene and vows to take Romilda as his bride, despite being betrothed to Amastre. Chaos ensues, disguises are employed and lies are told. Can the brothers and couples survive their rivalries, Ariodate's clumsiness and Atalanta's trickery?
Renowned for its sensational arias, including "Ombra mai fu" and "Crude furie degli orridi abbisi", Xerxes is one of Handel's most famous and beloved operas. This semi-staged production with full orchestra showcases some of Cambridge's finest singers and musicians in the stunning setting of St John's College Chapel.
