Heightened suspense and references to childhood trauma.
The Turn of the Screw is Britten’s final Chamber Opera, written in only four months and premiered in September 1954. It is based on Henry James’ novella The Turn of the Screw which concerns a young inexperienced governess sent to a country house to care for two children who she is gradually convinced have been corrupted by the ghosts of a previous manservant and governess. The drama grows increasingly tense with a tragic outcome.
