Bread Theatre and Film Company is a fresh representative voice in performing arts. Founded in 2019, we produce distinctive pieces of art across genre and forms, focussed on platforming underrepresented voices on the Cambridge stage and screen and encouraging experimental and alternative ways of storytelling. Our goal is to establish a diversity of alternative narratives at the heart of artistic spaces.
What does this mean in practice? We produce open mics, exhibitions, and fun socials for our communities to meet each other and experience art together. We sit on the ADC’s pitching panel and consistently advocate for shows that do things differently and give voice to the unheard, then we nurture & guide the production teams of shows to achieve their goals. We invite professionals to Cambridge to give workshops and talks. We are one of the only societies in Cambridge to fund new student films. We are always working with other societies to put on fun & meaningful events.
Bread takes its name from the revolutionary El Salvadorian poet Roque Dalton’s poem “Como Tú”. Dalton’s enduring vision for “those who struggle for life, love little things, landscape and bread, the poetry of everyone” is at the heart of our work. Inspired by this radical call to hope, we experiment with fresh ways of storytelling to disrupt narratives of power. We defy traditional boundaries, weave together art forms, and create work that transcends genre, language and geography.
