VISION
The play largely concerns itself with questions of memory — its fragility, its fallibility and its pliability. It is perhaps best thought of as essentially a ghost story, playing out in the minds of the characters — the dead spirits of the characters meeting to resolve unfinished business is an archetype of the ghost story, one which is used with great aplomb and sophistication in this play. Although the characters may want to be through with the past, it’s plain that the past is never quite through with them, and as such, the sense that their apparitions are transient and impossible to pin down needs to be shown to great effect, through both acting and production design.
Where production design is concerned, I was planning on using projections and audio snippets throughout to make manifest the many people, locations, events and ideas alluded to in the play in flashes of insight — akin to a life review — which would add to the immersive experience without distracting from the core of the play. The sort of magical realism behind the play should be enticing but never cloying, and should always be designed to support, not overpower, the sharp character dynamics which the play is built around.
