Somebody / Nobody is opening self-tape auditions for four cast members to bring the production to life. Supported by Fletcher Players and BREAD, the play is a new, student-written production.
Please send any auditions and/or queries to fjmw2@cam.ac.uk
SYNOPSIS
Cara’s supposed to be in her prime. She’s a fresh graduate with a stable job, a diet that isn’t exclusively spaghetti hoops on toast, and the kind of boyfriend your grandparents like more than you.
But behind closed doors, she’s struggling to stay afloat as the chronic illness that blighted her undergrad resurfaces.
As her health deteriorates again, her dad faces redundancy, and an old friend comes abruptly back into her life, Cara is confronted with harsh questions: to what extent should she allow her health to determine her identity, and how much can she allow it to impact others?
AVAILABLE PARTS
Cara is the play's protagonist, a recent graduate, now meteorologist, who's trying to balance her time-pressured career alongside her long-term health problems. She's ambitious, focused, and trying her best.
Ben is Cara's boyfriend. A junior doctor who brims with empathy, he's the right level of lad but with his head noticeably screwed on.
Ellie is Cara's schoolfriend who swoops back into her life after a long absence. Chaotic, passionate, and accidentally hilarious, we're looking for someone with strong comedic capabilities for this role!
Michael is Cara's dad. A worn-out secondary school teacher, continuously terrorised by Year Eight, he's well-meaning but a bit lost. We're keen to cast a postgraduate for this role - or someone with a middle aged mentality).
AUDITION DETAILS
Please find the audition extracts here: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/18umCp7f4KSYiljuO8syJmg_J9P5I0Kee?usp=share_link
As we're out of term-time, we're accepting self-tapes as auditions. Please send a WeTransfer link for the video of your audition to fjmw2@cam.ac.uk as soon as you're ready. No fancy camera is needed - just a smartphone recording is great.
We're very aware that the timing of the performances is close to exams, but want to stress that the play is only an hour and dialogue equally split between characters so it really is the ideal project to balance alongside. While the themes of the show look more challenging, we're aiming for the production to be as enjoyable as possible and want to reflect this in our production process too!
We're particularly keen to cast people with experience of chronic illness and/or disabilities for this production. Please reach out and let us know if there's anything we can do to accommodate your needs during the audition process (e.g. extended deadlines or scripts in alternative formats).
Please note that Cara and Ben's parts include infrequent kissing and non-sexual touching of each other. We're going to have an intimacy co-ordinator to support the direction of these moments, and are also happy to adjusting the script in accordance with actors' wishes.
Contact fjmw2@cam.ac.uk before 30th Apr 2025 23:59 for more details.
