PROFESSOR BERNHARDI IS COMING TO THE FITZPAT AS THE MAINSHOW FOR MICHAELMAS WEEK 7
Arthur Schnitzler's seminal 1912 work, translated with vigour and flair by Samuel Adamson, will be landing in Cambridge between the 30th November and 1st December!!!
Vienna, 1900. A Jewish doctor prevents a Catholic priest from absolving a dying patient. A witch hunt ensues.
The play itself, which was banned shortly after its first performance in Bavaria, provides a gripping and intense depiction of the innate frictions between science and religion. The titular Bernhardi, having refused a priest entry to the room of a dying girl for fear she might realise the end is near and pass away in fear and pain, is subject to overwhelming professional and public scrutiny. The court of public opinion frowns upon Bernhardi even more spitefully once the fact of his Jewish identity is used as a mark of supposed bias against the priest he dismissed. In the face of a foul and pervasive antisemitism, Bernhardi struggles to be judged on his professional merit alone as those around him become increasingly polarized.
In an age where the 'town forum' froths with more fervor than ever before across all places of discourse, online or otherwise, Professor Bernhardi is a work which demands viewing. At its core, the play presents the highest stakes imaginable: the struggle for the human spirit to define itself in the face of forces desperate to confine and silence it.

After its highly successful debut event last year, we are hosting another night of music and dance in the Fitzpatrick Hall, but with a new twist. This year, join us for an amazing night of live music, singing and dancing of hits from a range of iconic musical theatre shows! Featuring astonishing solo vocalists, dynamic dancers for waltzes, sambas, quicksteps and a fabulous live band.

In 2014, the UK’s first legalised red-light district opened in the Holbeck area of Leeds. Sex workers in Holbeck were able to operate with police supervision and without fear of arrest between the hours of 8pm-6am. This initiative was known as the Managed Approach. Managed Approach, the stage play, merges verbatim interview material into a plotline that portrays the dynamic between a mother and daughter who live in Holbeck.

The CUDCT are proud to announce that we are putting on a dance showcase on the 19th May!!
This showcase will feature jazz, tap, contemporary, commercial and hip hop routines danced by the CUDCT and other Cambridge dancers!!
Why are we doing this during exam term? We are trying to raise as much money as possible for three charities: Parkinson’s UK, Beat:Eating Disorders and UNICEF.
So if you are free on Sunday the 19th and want an evening of entertainment, come down to the Fitzpatrick Hall in Queens’ College Cambridge and watch these dancers dance their hearts out for charity!!

miracle on w. 50th street explores the details and intricacies of leaving one's home, and coming back again. It ponders questions of freedom, belonging, and connection as its characters intersect and part ways across the globe.
This workshop production of the play will marry rehearsal with performance, creating a unique opportunity for its audience to be a part of the creative process of a new play.

In a unique double-bill, BATS brings you David Mamet’s Prairie du Chien and Stephen Jeffreys’ Bugles at the Gates of Jalalabad. On a 3AM train passing though Wisconsin a traveller tells a tale of jealousy, murder and the supernatural; at night, outside the gates of the last British fort in Afghanistan, four buglers stand guard, awaiting their fate, sounding the advance. These plays present us with charged moments of fear and uncertainty, and the sudden catastrophes that can spring out of them.

Staving off medication, his sole ambition is to translate the last great work of Portuguese novelist Saramago: a blistering dystopia called Blindness. Yet, whilst Pontiero himself loses his sight, the question of his life’s work hangs in the balance: will he be able to finish his translation before the time runs out?
A heartfelt portrayal of the grave particulars of one man’s final days during the AIDS crisis, this remarkable, true story of queer expression asks us to question our responsibilities to our art, work and each other, posing the question: how far would we go for what we believe is true to us?

It’s Tibby’s twenty-fifth birthday and she is throwing a big party: after years, her friends from uni are coming together — and they are all doing better than her. All except Ginevra, Tibby’s best friend; too bad the two have barely kept in touch since Gin moved back to Italy. When she finally decides to visit the shabby flat she and Tibby used to share, tensions between the two friends become impossible to hide. Especially from Anika, Tibby’s new housemate with the perfect job, the perfect girlfriend, the perfect yoga outfits. As the three prepare for Tibby’s party, feelings get untangled, secrets revealed, and rejection emails — inevitably, relentlessly — opened.

Anna Karenina is beautiful and admired but empty – until a chance meeting throws her into emotional turmoil and a scandalous affair. Contrasting with this tale of destructive love is the story of Levin, an idealistic man striving to find meaning in life – and a self-portrait of Tolstoy himself.
Helen Edmundson's celebrated and 'exemplary' (The Times) adaptation of Leo Tolstoy's enduring classic is a vibrant and deeply moving meditation on the nature of love. Staged in the Fitzpatrick Hall, Queen's College, this stripped back production interrogates the core themes of the novel, updating them for a modern audience.

In the backdrop of an unnamed, impassive mental institution, three characters – Alpha, Beta and Gamma – are plagued by their pasts and conflicting desires to live the life they can or escape the institution at any cost. Under the ever-watchful eye of the Doctor who supposedly treats them for their illnesses, the true reality of the institution is unveiled as the Doctor’s own sanity is called into question and the walls of reality break down around them.
Reflecting on the abhorrent treatment of patients that has happened in asylums throughout history, this abstract play is inspired by the writings of Sarah Kane, and Fox’s Legion. It will take you on a stylised, visceral, yet less explicit exploration into the interactions, thoughts and deepest secrets of the so-called ‘clinically insane’.

Branches grow from sleeves, the mafia attend a crucifixion, a horse births human bodies. In this adaptation of Euripides we embody the Trojan Women, exploring displacement, ancestry and prophecy. Approaching text, choreography, soundscape and puppetry through the framework of the four elements, and the four corners of a single room, the disparate stories of the women merge into a single substance. We mediate the hinterland between ancient mythology and personal memory. Driven by the force of Dionysian tragedy, creation and destruction, warfare is transmuted by forgiveness.
Wringing Metamorphosis is a dance theatre company launched by Charis Taplin and Blue Pieta, with musical direction and performance from Elinor Arden and Jessica Raja Brown. We combine dance, theatre and performance art with live music moving between genres and languages; alongside disciplines from cinema to puppetry. We devise original work through a combination of contemporary and ancient dance- theatre techniques, and deep physical research into personal dreamscape and familial history, with imagery ranging from medieval religious iconography to Mesopotamian myth, to film noir. The multidisciplinary dimensions of our work join in the fulcrum of the body, turning the stage - be it a theatre, field, studio, or shower cubicle - into a limitless space, where the threads of performance are woven into the audience to create an immersive fabric.

We are bringing the Agatha Christie classic back to life and re-situating it in a modernised context!
Ten strangers are mysteriously invited to Soldier Island by an eccentric millionaire unknown to all of them. Upon their arrival, their host is nowhere to be found. The only thing the guests have in common is a wicked past that they’re desperate to hide: each has been accused of murder. As their stay begins, the guests are horrified to find that they are being murdered, slowly, one by one in accordance to the strange nursery rhyme framed and hung in each room of the mansion: ‘Ten Little Soldier Boys’. Terror mounts as the guests are unable to pinpoint the murderer in their midst, and find themselves trapped on the remote island.

In purgatory, a court case is being heard against Judas Iscariot, the notorious betrayer of Jesus Christ. Witnesses from across history are invited to give their testimonies. Was it a terrible crime, or was it a necessary part of God’s great plan?
Set in a time-bending, seriocomically imagined courtroom where saints talk streets slang and lawyers barter with Satan, The Last Days of Judas Iscariot is an ambitious philosophical meditation on religion. The play alternates between riotously funny and deeply thought-provoking, revealing at its heart profound reflections on human fallibility, guilt and forgiveness.
Regardless of your faith-or lack thereof-you may discover a new gem or two from a two-millennia-old story.

Cambridge University Gilbert and Sullivan Society are delighted to return to Fitzpatrick Hall with a production of Iolanthe in May Week 2020, presented in collaboration with the St Margaret's Society of Queens' College. In a bizarre collision of the theatrical worlds of fairy tale and British politics, Gilbert and Sullivan's satirical operetta 'Iolanthe' is an entertaining spectacle not to be missed out on!

Augustine's Lie
The story of the Briton who defended human free will against the idea of original sin as the Roman empire collapsed.
Tried for heresy three times and acquitted three times, Pelagius was then condemned as a result of corruption. This is the story of the lie that saw him condemned, and the mix of religion and politics as the world fell apart that installed original sin as orthodoxy in the west.

"The bonds of heaven are slipp'd, dissolved, and loosed."
Seven years into the Trojan War, the two sides are at a stalemate. Dissent is growing in the Greek camp, prompted by the hero Achilles' refusal to fight. Within Troy, King Priam and his generals are beginning to wonder whether keeping Helen - the Spartan queen who has eloped with Trojan prince Paris - is worth the toll the conflict is taking. Against this backdrop, two young Trojans, Troilus and Cressida, are taking tentative steps towards romance, aided by Cressida's boorish uncle Pandarus. Will they be able to carve out a place for their fledgling love amidst the violence and bloodshed, or will, as the clown Thersites puts it, 'war and lechery confound all'?
This production will be accompanied by a symposium bringing together professional theatre practitioners and literary academics to discuss Shakespeare’s play on the page and on the stage. More details to follow.

Alexander Ivanov is imprisoned in a Soviet mental hospital for statements against the government. He shares a cell with another Ivanov, who believes himself to be a conductor with a symphony orchestra under his command. Alexander's son Sacha is in a classroom with a teacher convinced of the genuineness of his father's illness, whilst inside the hospital, a doctor attempts to cure his patients by setting them lines. Ivanov's imaginary orchestra, on stage with the actors, surrounds them all, filling the spaces between their truths with music...
In this rarely performed one-act play with live music, playwright Tom Stoppard and composer André Previn interweave six actors and a chamber orchestra to create a strange and compelling world of authority, artistry and madness.

A silent caretaker stands alone in a hotel. This is the location an English couple have chosen to meet with an Irish Woman, offering her an unnamed service. Over the course of the night, each of them must face what they fear. As the music envelopes all, not everyone will live through the night.
A show combining theatre and opera, Donnacha Dennehy and Enda Walsh's 'The Last Hotel' is a poignant and visceral exploration of love and death in modern day capitalist society. Two of Ireland's leading artists, Walsh (multi-award winning playwright, screenwriter and Tony Award winner in 2012 for the book of the musical 'Once' ) and Dennehy (founder of the Crash ensemble and renowned composer) create a truly breathtaking work that reaches the heights of what modern opera can achieve.

Juliet is deciding whether she wants to marry her parents’ idea of the ‘perfect Muslim husband’. Meanwhile, Romeo sits in the local chicken shop with his friends, who are trying to convince him to move on from the girl he thought was ‘the one’. Their summers pass in a blur of parties, violence and love, but they ultimately cannot avoid the roles they are expected to play.
Incorporating the experiences of its all-BME cast and production team, this contemporary adaptation updates Shakespeare’s classic tragedy to explore minority experiences.

Thyestes and Atreus are twin brothers, kings of Argos.
His lands stolen, his wife seduced, cast out from his home, Atreus swears bloody vengeance on his brother. Now once again ruler of his land, he is determined to exact such revenge on Thyestes that the sun will avert its gaze, the stars will fall from the sky and people will talk of the horror forever after.
Inspired by the well-established Cambridge Greek Play, the very first Cambridge Latin Play will stage one of the most violent and heart-breaking tales from the Classical world. Exploring vengeance and pity, families and kingdoms, passion and desire, it lays bare man’s cruellest and most base instincts, culminating in a grotesque finale of cannibalism.
No less relevant or brilliant than Greek drama, Latin theatre has been sadly underrepresented – this production will bring to life not only the text but the language too, performed in Latin with English subtitles.

Matthew is painfully average.
He lives in a featureless room in a high-rise flat. He has a job he doesn’t understand, neighbours he can hear through paper-thin walls and a little brother awaiting execution for murder.
But none of that matters to Matthew. He's too busy panicking over a table that has appeared on the street outside. No one will touch it. No one will take it away.
And he just can't understand why it's there.
I Need You To Be Quiet Now is an ambitious one-man show exploring obsession and the conversations we try to avoid.

The year is 1968 and the British legal system is as corrupt as ever. The breach of promise of marriage law is still technically in force and Juries remain predominantly male. The arrogant Edwin has been summoned to Court by his ex-fiancée, Angelina, under said law, and against each other they fight to win the trial! Complete with a dodgy Judge, a questionable jury and some dubious decisions, chaos inevitably ensues...
‘Trial by Jury’ is a one act operatic satire of the Victorian British legal system, which will be brought into the 60’s in our exciting rendition of this production!

The arrival of an ambitious doctor and a strange new patient called Jane lead him out of his silence and into a world of dreams, fairies and madness. Dadd begins to paint again – but what buried horrors could it awaken in his mind?
Based on the life of an extraordinary artist, Master-Stroke tells a story of art and obsession, of people caught in the most alienating and dehumanising of circumstances. It is a meeting of fantasy and reality at a time of changing perceptions of art, illness and gender, a story of possession by devils and other forces outside our control.

This will be a diverse and interactive BME production truly built around its cast, crew, and communities. Join us, as we present the play as it has never been seen before!
